Fall Bird Walk

Cold Spring Park 1094 Beacon St, Newton, MA, United States

Fall is an excellent time to look for birds. Take an easy walk on fairly fat woodland trails to look for fall migrants like warblers and vireos as well as early winter birds such as White-throated Sparrows and our resident birds such as Northern Cardinals.  Park at the Beacon St. parking lot and meet at the circle. Bring binoculars if you have them. Beginners as well as experienced birders are welcome. Boots are recommended. If in doubt about the weather, please call.  This walk is cosponsored by the Brookline Bird Club,  Trip Leader is Newton Conservators board member and frquent newsletter contributor Pete Gilmore (617-610-2477). Newton Conservators’ Webster Woods Walk

Autumn is time for fall foliage in New England. Learn why leaves change color and drop off in October, and how climate change is altering the season. We might even see beautiful witch hazel flowers, the last plant to flower. We will also discuss past land use, and current efforts to protect Webster Woods.  Tour leader is Richard Primack, Botany Professor at BU, Cell phone: 857-636-8378.  Meet at the end of Warren Street.  Please park up Warren a few houses (in the address range 40 to 56 Warren), so as not to clog the end of this small dead end street. Visit the Conservators' Webster Woods page for more on what you can do to save the woods.

Invasives pull

Cold Spring Park 1094 Beacon St, Newton, MA, United States

Come join us this Saturday morning (Nov 2) 9:30-11:30 at Cold Spring Park (back of Beacon St. parking lot) and we'll work on removing more Tree of Heaven in the meadow, knotweed (so that it will be easier to scythe next year), bittersweet, and maybe also multiflora rose and barberry, for a change! We have scattered thousands of native plant seeds in the area cleared last time. It will be exciting to see what comes up in the spring.  If anyone would like to join us it would be great to have your company and your help.

Invasive buckthorn seedling pull

This Sunday morning, we will remove small buckthorns seedlings in the Buckthorn demonstration plots. Buckthorn is the invasive plant that is threatening the Cold Spring Park Red Maple Forest.  You would be most welcome to join, if you can make it! It is forecasted to be in the mid 40's so hopefully if we dress warmly it will be comfortable enough.  Thank you, Katherine 617-721-2571 cell

Green Newton program on Cold Spring Park

Newton Free Library

Brandeis Biologist and environmental leader Eric Olson will discuss: "Can the Red Maple Forest Be Saved?," and his demonstration project removing invasive glossy buckthorn from the park wetlands, to try to allow red maples to germinate and thrive again.  Friends of Cold Spring Park founder and President Alan Nogee will talk about the many faces of Cold Spring Park. He’ll discuss a little of the park's history and problems, what we've accomplished in our first year, and plans for the future.
