Green Newton program on Cold Spring Park

Newton Free Library

Brandeis Biologist and environmental leader Eric Olson will discuss: "Can the Red Maple Forest Be Saved?," and his demonstration project removing invasive glossy buckthorn from the park wetlands, to try to allow red maples to germinate and thrive again.  Friends of Cold Spring Park founder and President Alan Nogee will talk about the many faces of Cold Spring Park. He’ll discuss a little of the park's history and problems, what we've accomplished in our first year, and plans for the future.

Invasive buckthorn seedling pull

This Sunday morning, we will remove small buckthorns seedlings in the Buckthorn demonstration plots. Buckthorn is the invasive plant that is threatening the Cold Spring Park Red Maple Forest.  You would be most welcome to join, if you can make it! It is forecasted to be in the mid 40's so hopefully if we dress warmly it will be comfortable enough.  Thank you, Katherine 617-721-2571 cell

Invasives pull

Cold Spring Park 1094 Beacon St, Newton

Come join us this Saturday morning (Nov 2) 9:30-11:30 at Cold Spring Park (back of Beacon St. parking lot) and we'll work on removing more Tree of Heaven in the meadow, knotweed (so that it will be easier to scythe next year), bittersweet, and maybe also multiflora rose and barberry, for a change! We have scattered thousands of native plant seeds in the area cleared last time. It will be exciting to see what comes up in the spring.  If anyone would like to join us it would be great to have your company and your help.
